The Angels appearing to the Shepherds Rembrandt van Rijn

  • Curator’s description:

    Description

Cook and Wedderburn noted that this frame was empty in 1906, and the print is represented here by a surrogate example of the third state, drawn from the Ashmolean's collections. Ruskin's example, from which he copied the angel's wings in Educational Series no. 237.b, must have been the second or third state, as the wings are unfinished in the first state.
