Print of the Decoration on a Greek Vase, showing Apollo and Artemis Anonymous, Continental

  • Curator’s description:

    Description

This frame originally contained a plate from Lenormant and De Witte's "Elite des monuments céramographiques, published between 1844 and 1861. However, Ruskin's description of the plate - '"Apollo and Artemis." Greek vase-painting' is insufficient to identify the plate - the second volume of Lenormant and de Witte is almost entirely dedicated to images of Apollo and Artemis/Diana. It was presumably taken from Ruskin's copy of the work now preserved in the Ruskin Library (inventory no. 1996B2621), which is missing many of its plates.

The plate first appeared in the Teaching Collection in 1831, when Ruskin catalogued it as no. 23 in Educational Series, the first of a series of similar items in Case II representing "Elementary Illustrations of Greek Design". It remained in the same position, although renumbered as no. 39, in the 1874 catalogue of the series, but does not appear in Ruskin's 1878 reorganisation of the series. Cook and Wedderburn noted in 1906 (XXI.78 n. 4) that it was no longer in the collection.
